Why is ISO Certified and ROHS Compliant important?
ISO certification shows that the company is aware of and complies with the requirements recognized to produce quality products. In fact, ISO (International Standards Organization) specifies requirements for a quality management system designated by numbers and a year like ISO 9001:2008.
To become certified, companies like Goodyear Rubber have to demonstrate an ability to consistently provide product that meets customer requirements, while adhering to applicable statutory regulations.
The goal is to enhance customer satisfaction by effectively applying said system. This includes implementing processes for continual improvement of the system and providing the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable regulatory and statutory requirements.
One interesting thing is that all ISO 9001:2008 requirements are generic and intended to apply to all organizations, regardless of type, size and product involved.
The ISO standard itself is a documented agreement containing technical specifications or other precise criteria that is used consistently as rules, guidelines, or definitions of characteristics to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for purpose. It’s meant to be a living agreement influencing the safety, reliability and efficiency of tools and machinery and much more.
ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)
This designation (also known as lead-free) originated in the European Union. It restricts the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products including lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (CrVI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), and four different phthalates (DEHP, BBP, BBP, DIBP).
The reason use of these materials are restricted is that they are hazardous to the environment and pollute landfills. They are also dangerous in terms of occupational exposure during manufacturing and recycling processes.
