Materials Science & Formulations

Rubber Compounding That Works Harder

At Goodyear Rubber of Southern California, material science is at the core of everything we do. With over 70 years of rubber compounding expertise, our in-house team formulates and processes a wide range of elastomers tailored for performance, durability, and precision across industries.

We offer a robust catalog of compounds spanning the full range of material types, durometer hardness, and application-specific characteristics. Whether it’s sealing at high pressure, insulating against vibration, or resisting aggressive fluids, we engineer rubber to perform.

Goodyear Rubber Materials

Materials We Work With

Our compounds are built from a variety of base elastomers, including:

EPDM

Excellent for weather, ozone, and steam resistance

Nitrile (NBR)

Ideal for fuel and oil resistance

Neoprene (CR)

A versatile option with good flame, weather, and moderate chemical resistance

Silicone (VMQ)

High-temperature stability, flexibility, and excellent electrical insulation

Natural Rubber (NR)

Outstanding tensile strength, elasticity, and abrasion resistance

Fluorosilicone (FVMQ) and Fluoroelastomers (FKM)

For critical applications needing fuel, chemical, or high-heat resistance

Shore A durometer

Durometer Range: From Soft to Rigid

We match durometer to your specific performance criteria, including compression set, tensile strength, elongation, and tear resistance. We formulate compounds across a wide range of Shore A durometer values to suit the functional needs of your part:

25–40 Shore A

Soft and flexible, used for expansion joints, gaskets, and sealing against irregular surfaces

50–70 Shore A

Balanced resilience and strength — ideal for diaphragms, O-rings, and molded seals

90–98 Shore A

Very hard rubbers for structural components, rigid rolls, or static sealing under compression

Goodyear Rubber Applications

Tailored to Application

Every compound is developed with the end use in mind. A few examples of how our material science supports real-world applications:

  • Kevlar-reinforced diaphragms that resist delamination and fatigue in chlorinated water environments
  • High-durometer nitrile for oilfield and industrial seals requiring long-term chemical resistance
  • Silicone compounds for aerospace and medical applications, delivering purity, temperature resistance, and compliance with demanding specs
  • Neoprene blends for abrasion-resistant expansion belts and industrial rolls

Specifications & Testing

We build every compound around measurable, consistent performance. Our team works with customers to meet or exceed relevant industry specifications, including:

  • ASTM D2000
  • MIL-SPEC / A-A-59588
  • FDA 21 CFR 177.2600
  • NSF / UL standards
  • Customer-specific blueprints and proprietary specs

Certified test reports are available upon request. We also offer full traceability for critical aerospace, medical, and defense parts. Our lab supports validation and quality assurance through testing such as:

  • Durometer (Shore A)
  • Tensile strength and elongation
  • Tear resistance
  • Compression set
  • Oil swell and fluid compatibility
  • Steam aging
  • Bond strength (fabric and metal substrates)
  • SEM, FTIR, MDR, and crosslink density when needed
