Nitrile Polymer

Goodyear Rubber Company of Southern California has been manufacturing nitrile polymer products for more than 30 years. Nitrile Rubber or NBR or Nitrile Polymer (Buna N) is synthetic and is used in applications requiring resistance to petroleum oils and gasoline because of its tendency to withstand oils, greases, many hydrocarbons, fats, hydraulic fluids and chemicals.

It can, however, have a reduced flexibility. It is generally attacked by keytones, esters, aldehydes, chlorinated, sunlight, flame, weather and nitro hydrocarbons. Nitrile polymer minimal service temperature is -30°F to -70°F with a maximum service temperature of +220° F to +280° F.

The substance is used in the automotive and aerospace industry to make fuel / oil handling hoses, seals and grommets. Other applications include carburetor and fuel-pump diaphragms, aircraft hoses and gaskets.

Origin

Nitrile Rubber arose as a product of research that took place during and between the two world wars. German chemists, working for IG Farben, patented a group of acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymers in 1934 while Buna N was produced in the United States during World War II as GR-N (Government Rubber-Nitrile).

Storage

To maintain the properties of nitrile rubber, store in a cool, dry place with temperature below 75°F. Make sure it is not near direct heat or open flames. Do not allow contact with solvents or other fluids. Keep it away from direct sunlight. Wrap and seal the rubber to minimize moisture absorption.
